I'm studying engineering and AI at the University of Waterloo, and currently working on agentic systems at Friedmann AI.
I built my first game on Scratch in grade 6, and I still think about software in a pretty similar way. Make something playful. Make it work. Keep rebuilding it until it feels right.
Since then, I've mostly been drawn to the kind of engineering that gives time back. In university, that has meant automating busy work like iClicker and building small systems that make everyday workflows less annoying.
The surface area changes. Sometimes it is distributed systems. Sometimes it is mechanistic interpretability. Sometimes it is browser tooling. The throughline stays the same. Take something messy, make it clear, and turn it into software people can actually use.
I'm also always reading papers and implementation writeups with the same question in mind. What does it take to make this real? The part I like most is closing the gap between a good idea on paper and something you can actually ship.
